Stay Creative

Putting a twist on a twist    A work in progress

Keeping the inspiration flowing is awesome.  With the past year and a half of minimal to no social gathering for quilters, it can be challenging. How I keep my creative inspirations going. Some easy tips to stay in the ‘quilt creating mood’.  The layout above is a twist on the pattern called twisted rail fence.
After I made the blocks I changed how I played with the layout design to be just a bit different from the overall look of a twisted rail fence quilt.

FIFTEEN MINUTES

Let’s start with 15 minutes. Take 15 minutes to go into your creative space if you have been away from it too long. You don’t have to spend hours at a time. Look at your space, sort your paints, tools, batting, or just savor over some books you like. Keep it fresh. Think of all the things you want to create.  In those 15 minutes, you may find one inspiring thing that will help you stay inspired to create.

FINISH IT

One way I stay motivated and creative is to “finish” a piece of art.
Small art pieces are just as much fun as large pieces to keep your creative spirit up.
This original dancing lady was completed as I experimented with color and machine quilting. I really like it. It makes a great gift as a wall hanging. Sleeve attached and ready to accent a wall. I am inspired.

I’ve been on a mission to downsize for years from my stash. This delay and can cause stress and zapped inspiration when the task is not complete. What to do with it. Finish something. Finishing a project small or big boosts creativity. A little bit can go a long way.

Stacks and stacks of fabric, oh my!

We may love fabrics, but do fabrics love us. Does it like sitting all neat and folded on the shelf or does it want to be created into a beautiful, useful, fun, comforting piece of art? I think it wants to be created.
With that in mind, I knew my creative inspiration was recharged around all those fat quarters and scraps. I began pulling them off the self and creating items. When engaging in making things, to donate as friendly gifts my creativity was boosted. It’s not every day I can make a quilt, but I can use that fabric to create projects to donate.
Perhaps there was a book and patten you bought and never got around to making. Take it out and lay it in view. Take out one project at a time to focus on to keep from being overwhelmed. One that that got you all excited in the first place to try out. This can be hard for creative people; so keep each project separate and organized so that when you do pick it up all items are together. This will help! Trust me I know. I have lots of projects to complete, so when I pull one out everything is together in a neat clear plastic container. All I have to do is start stitching.
So for me, I put away all except the one or (two) 😊 that I really want to complete. This way I am not overwhelmed and unmotivated.
It can be a UFO, collection of blocks from a challenge, a make and take that was started in a class that I never completed or a pattern for a special occasion. I actually took a finished paper pieced block and make a wall hanging or a strip flip and sew turned it into a “hot pad or mug rug".
These make great gifts and having them ready will delight anyone that receives a handmade project from you. All fabrics do not have to become queen size quilts. But quilted items for the home can range from accent table runners, bed runners, photo art, quilted placemats, and the list goes on. I have not mentioned quilted wearables. Vests, jackets, skirts, wraps, and more.
Stay inspired by picking one project, small or large, depending on how engaged you want to be. It’s OK to take a break when your creativity is low, just don’t stop! Do you get where I’m going?
